No Need for Mediation in Islam? Refuting the Repeated Distortion of a Muslim Dawagandist Pt. 1

Muslim polemicist Abdullah Kunde engaged in a debate with Dr. James R. White on the topic, “How Can Man Have Peace With God” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqgEMoU0M4Q. In his closing statements Kunde again repeated the old Muslim canard that Islam denies the need of a mediator in order to attain peace and salvation:

“The critical difference between the Islamic message and the Christian message is around the need for a mediator. I’m going to say up front we don’t believe that we need one; we believe that God loves us so much that he accepts us precisely the way that he created us.”

This led Dr. White to make the following comment in his answer to the last question that was asked of both debaters:

“You heard just before, Abdullah said where we fundamentally disagree is we don’t need a mediator. We say we need a mediator, and it is only in the giving of that mediator that we can truly know the heart of God, and hence know that we have peace with him.”

Unfortunately, Kunde isn’t the only Muhammadan who asserts that Islam rejects the need for mediation or intercession:

Islam is a divinely-revealed religion, which connects a believer to his Lord with no intermediary. So a person worships his Lord whenever he wants, and calls upon Him when he wants. He is connected to his Lord by ties of worship, by turning to Him and beseeching Him. He does not need the intercession of priests or rabbis. Rather he turns directly to Allaah, the One, the Subduer of all. (Islam Question and Answer General Supervisor: Shaykh Muhammad Saalih al-Munajjid, 13759: Muslims and how others perceive them https://islamqa.info/en/13759)

It truly gets tiring having to deal with the same old lies and propaganda of these Muslim polemicists. The fact is that both the Quran and ahadith go out of their way to emphasize that there can be no true Islam WITHOUT TOTAL SUBMISSION AND OBEDIENCE TO MUHAMMAD!

For instance, the Quran makes the love of Allah dependent on obedience to his “messenger”:

Say, “If you love God then follow me so God will love you and forgive your sins.” God is Forgiver, Compassionate.” Say, “Obey God and the messenger.” But if they turn away, then God does not like the ingrates. S. 3:31-32 Quran: A Reformist Translation (QRT)

Here is another English rendering of v. 32:

Say to them: “Be obedient to Allah and to His Messenger, but if they turn a deaf ear then they must realize that Allah detests the infidels who deny Him“. Al-Muntakhab http://www.islamawakened.com/quran/3/st1.htm

The Quran also stresses the need for perfectly submitting to Muhammad’s desires and judgments:

No, by your Lord, they are not muminun until they make you their judge in the disputes that break out between them, and then find no resistance within themselves to what YOU decide and submit themselves completely. S. 4:65 Aisha Bewley http://www.islamawakened.com/quran/4/st6.htm

Compare the above translation with the following version:

But no! By your Lord, they do not (truly) believe unless they make you the judge regarding any dispute between them, and then find not the least vexation within themselves over what YOU have decided, and surrender in full submission. Ali Unal http://www.islamawakened.com/quran/4/st7.htm

Ibn Kathir provides the historical scenario which occasioned the “revelation” of this passage:

(But no, by your Lord, they can have no faith, until they make you (O Muhammad) judge in all disputes between them.) Another Reason In his Tafsir, Al-Hafiz Abu Ishaq Ibrahim bin `Abdur-Rahman bin Ibrahim bin Duhaym recorded that Damrah narrated that two men took their dispute to the Prophet, and he gave a judgment to the benefit of whoever among them had the right. The person who lost the dispute said, “I do not agree.” The other person asked him, “What do you want then?” He said, “Let us go to Abu Bakr As-Siddiq.” They went to Abu Bakr and the person who won the dispute said, “We went to the Prophet with our dispute and he issued a decision in my favor.” Abu Bakr said, “Then the decision is that which the Messenger of Allah issued.” The person who lost the dispute still rejected the decision and said, “Let us go to `Umar bin Al-Khattab.” When they went to `Umar, the person who won the dispute said, “We took our dispute to the Prophet and he decided in my favor, but this man refused to submit to the decision.” `Umar bin Al-Khattab asked the second man and he concurred. `Umar went to his house and emerged from it holding aloft his sword. HE STRUCK THE HEAD OF THE MAN WHO REJECTED THE PROPHET’S DECISION WITH THE SWORD AND KILLED HIM. Consequently, Allah revealed

(But no, by your Lord, they can have no faith). (Tafsir Ibn Kathir http://www.qtafsir.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=640&Itemid=59; bold and capital emphasis ours)

Here was a man who was murdered in cold blood simply because he was displeased with Muhammad’s judgment!

The Muslim scripture even states that to obey Muhammad is to obey Allah!

He who obeys the Messenger (Muhammad), has indeed obeyed Allah, but he who turns away, then we have not sent you (O Muhammad) as a watcher over them. S. 4:80 Hilali-Khan

The Quran further exhorts the “faithful” to devote themselves entirely to the service of both Allah and his “prophet”, and to never question any of Muhammad’s decrees:

And whoever of you is devout in the service of Allah AND His Messenger, and helps augment the society, We shall give her reward twice-over, for, We have readied for her a most excellent sustenance. S. 33:31 Shabbir Ahmed http://www.islamawakened.com/quran/33/st25.htm

It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah AND His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he has indeed strayed in a plain error. S. 33:36 Hilali-Khan

It even goes so far as to require all Muslims to love Muhammad just as much as they love the Islamic deity, and more than anyone else including their very own lives:

Say, “If are your fathers, and your sons, and your brothers, and your spouses, and your relatives, and wealth that you have acquired and the commerce, you fear a decline (in) it and the dwellings you delight (in) it (are) more beloved to you than Allah, AND His Messenger and striving in His way, then wait until Allah brings His Command. And Allah (does) not guide the people – the defiantly disobedient.” S. 9:24

This is why Muslims are told to never love anyone who opposes Muhammad and his god:

Thou wilt not find folk who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah AND His messenger, even though they be their fathers or their sons or their brethren or their clan. As for such, He hath written faith upon their hearts and hath strengthened them with a Spirit from Him, and He will bring them into Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide. Allah is well pleased with them, and they are well pleased with Him. They are Allah’s party. Lo! is it not Allah’s party who are the successful? S. 58:22 Pickthall

Muhammad himself is reported to have said that one will not have complete faith until s/he loves Muhammad and his deity more than everything:

Narrated Anas:
The Prophet said, “Whoever possesses the following three qualities will have the sweetness (delight) of faith:
1. The one to whom Allah AND His Apostle becomes dearer than anything else.
2. Who loves a person and he loves him only for Allah’s sake.
3. Who hates to revert to Atheism (disbelief) as he hates to be thrown into the fire.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 15 http://searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=2&translator=1&start=0&number=15)

And:

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Hisham: We were with the Prophet and he was holding the hand of ‘Umar bin Al-Khattab. ‘Umar said to Him, “O Allah’s Apostle! You are dearer to me than everything except my own self.” The Prophet said, “No, by Him in Whose Hand my soul is, (you will not have complete faith) till I am dearer to you than your own self.” Then ‘Umar said to him, “However, now, by Allah, you are dearer to me than my own self.” The Prophet said, “Now, O ‘Umar, (now you are a believer).” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 78, Number 628 http://searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=78&translator=1&start=0&number=628)

That’s not all. The Quran clearly stresses the need for Muhammad’s mediation in order to obtain “salvation” and the forgiveness of sins:

We sent no messenger save that he should be obeyed by Allah’s leave. And if, when they had wronged themselves, they had but come unto thee and asked forgiveness of Allah, and asked forgiveness of the messenger, they would have found Allah Forgiving, Merciful. S. 4:64 Pickthall

Of their goods, take alms, that so thou mightest purify and sanctify them; and pray on their behalf. Verily thy prayers are a source of security for them: And God is One Who heareth and knoweth. S. 9:103 Y. Ali

The true believers are ONLY those, who believe in (the Oneness of) Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad), and when they are with him on some common matter, they go not away until they have asked HIS permission. Verily! Those who ask YOUR permission, those are they who (really) believe in Allah and His Messenger. So if they ask your permission for some affairs of theirs, give permission to whom you will of them, and ask Allah for their forgiveness. Truly, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. S. 24:62 Hilali-Khan

These verses raise a serious problem for Kunde and his fellow Muhammadans. Seeing that Muhammad has been dead for over fourteen hundred years this either means that much of the Quran has been made obsolete with his passing, proving that it isn’t a message for all times. Or these verses are still binding on Muslims such as Kunde, and if so, then this means that Muslims are required to believe that their prophet is still praying and interceding for his community even though he has been dead and buried for approximately 15 centuries. As such, this implies that Kunde and his fellow Muhammadans are still obligated to seek their prophet’s intercession, either by praying to him directly and/or by visiting his grave in order to personally ask him to pray on their behalf, which is precisely what some Muslims did and still do!

Take, for instance, what the following renowned Islamic scholar stated concerning Q. 4:64:

Although, this verse (64) was revealed in the background of a particular incident relating to hypocrites, yet its words yield A GENERAL RULING which stipulates that anyone who presents himself before the Holy Prophet and he prays for his forgiveness, he will be definitely forgiven. And ‘the presence before the Prophet,’ as it would have been during his blessed life in this mortal world, HOLDS THE SAME EFFECT EVEN TODAY as the visit to the sacred precincts of the Mosque of the Prophet and the act of ‘presenting’ oneself BEFORE THE BLESSED RESIDENT OF THE SANCTIFIED MAUSOLEUM FALLS WITHIN THE JURISDICTION OF THIS RULE.

Sayyidna ‘Ali has said: “Three days after we all had finished with the burial of the Messenger of Allah a villager came and fell down close to the blessed grave. Weeping bitterly, he referred to this particular verse of the Qur’an AND ADDRESSING HIMSELF TO THE BLESSED GRAVE, he said: ‘Allah Almighty has promised in this verse that a sinner, if he presented himself before the Rasul of Allah, and the Rasul elects to pray for his forgiveness, then he will forgive him. Therefore, here I am, presenting myself BEFORE YOU so that I may be blessed with YOUR prayer for my forgiveness.’ People personally present there at that time say that, in response to the pleading of the villager, a voice coming out from the sanctified mausoleum rang around with the words… You have been forgiven.” (al-Bahr al-Muhit) (Mufti Shafi Usmani, Maariful Quran, Volume 2, p. 486 https://ia802707.us.archive.org/2/items/maarifulquran-english-pdf/MaarifulquranEnglishPdf-Vol2-Page451-505ByMuftiShafiUsmaniRah.pdf; bold and capital emphasis ours)

Ibn Kathir mentions another instance where a person came to Muhammad’s grave and prayed to him to intercede with Allah:

“… A group of the scholars amongst whom is Shaikh Abu-Mansour As-Sabagh said in his book named Ash-Shamel this well-known narration on the authority of Al-Utby who said: ‘While I was sitting by the grave of the Prophet, a nomad came and said: “Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah! I heard that Allah says: <If they (hypocrites), when they had been unjust…> and that I there came to you in repentance TAKING YOU AN INTERCESSOR FOR ME TO MY LORD (Allah).’ Then the nomad chanted:

O you whose body is the best that is entombed.

That with his blessing the grave and mounts are surely endued.

Sacrificed is my soul for a grave you are therein placed.

Therein are chastity, generosity and munificence treasured.

“Then the nomad left. When I fell asleep, I saw the Prophet saying to me: ‘O Utby! Reach the nomad and give him the glad tiding THAT ALLAH HAS FORGIVEN HIM.’” (Tafsir Ibn Kathir (Abridged), translated by Muhammad Anis Gad Khalil [Dar Al-Manarah 2007], Volume 1, p. 339; capital emphasis ours)

Here we have two cases where Muslims went to the very grave of Muhammad in order to ask a dead man to pray that Allah would grant them forgiveness! If this isn’t intercession then I don’t know what is!

The very fact that this practice of going to the tomb of Muhammad to seek his intercession is said to be a general ruling for all Muslims means that Islam actually condones grave worship and encourages its adherents to contact the dead.

We have more for Kunde and his ilk in the next part of our rebuttal https://islamunmasked.com/2016/11/27/no-need-for-mediation-in-islam-refuting-the-repeated-distortion-of-a-muslim-dawagandist-pt-2/.
