In these series of articles we will be providing verses from the Holy Bible which prove that Jesus Christ is Jehovah God Almighty in the flesh, being both God and Man at the same time.

GOD

Jesus is called God, and even THE God, in several passages of Holy Scripture.

For example, Jesus is the Mighty God who would be born as a child and reign on David’s throne forever:

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” Isaiah 9:6-7 – cf. 10:20-21

Jesus is also THE God of heaven who has come to be with us till the end of this age:

“Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God (ho theos) with us.” Matthew 1:22-23

“Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28:20

He is even THE God who does great things:

“Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God (ho theos) hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things JESUS had done unto him.” Luke 8:39

Christ is further identified as the Word that is truly God in essence that became flesh,

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” John 1:1, 14

Having eternally existed in the very form of God even before he became a man:

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2:5-8

Finally, Jesus is the God that is eternally blessed and who reigns over all creation for ever and ever:

“Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever.” Amen.” Romans 9:5

“But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God (ho theos), is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.” Hebrews 1:8

This explains why the Apostle Thomas worshiped the risen Christ as his sovereign God, an act of worship which Jesus accepts and blesses as true saving faith:

“And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God (ho theos mou). Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” John 20:28-29

IMMUTABLE CREATOR AND SUSTAINER 

The Holy Bible teaches that Jesus is the divine Agent of creation, the One whom the Father employed to personally create and sustain all things by his [the Son’s] powerful word:

 ^“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men… He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.” John 1:3-4, 10

“and to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:” Ephesians 3:9

“Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and FOR him: And he IS before all things, and by him all things consist.” Colossians 1:15-17

These texts basically ascribe to Christ all of the essential attributes of God, specifically uncreatedness/eternality, omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence. In order for Christ to have created all the things which have come into being, and also be able to sustain the entire creation, he must have existed before creation. Yet if he existed before creation came into being then he cannot be a creature. Moreover, Christ must be powerful enough to be able to bring the entire creation into existence, as well as to oversee and sustain every aspect of it. However, such a power must be infinite, which only God possesses. And in order for him to be able to oversee the entire creation he must be omnipresent, meaning that creation must be ever present before him.

We will have more to say concerning Jesus’ omni-attributes a little later.

This next one is truly remarkable:

“Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power… And, Thou, Lord [the Son], in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.” Hebrews 1:2-3a, 10-12

In the above citation, the inspired author of Hebrews quotes the following OT text which exalts Jehovah as the unchanging Creator and Sustainer,

“This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the Lord. For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the Lord behold the earth; To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death; To declare the name of the Lord in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem; When the people are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the Lord. He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days. I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are throughout all generations. Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end. The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee.” Psalm 102:18-28

And applied it to Christ, which means that Hebrews is identifying Jesus as Jehovah God!

But that’s not all that Hebrews says concerning Christ’s role as Creator:

“Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house. For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house. For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God. And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.” Hebrews 3:1-6

The reason why Jesus is deserving of more honor than Moses is because he is the Son who is the builder of all things, including the household in which Moses operated as a faithful servant. Therefore, the builder has greater honor than the building. And yet since God is the builder of all things this means that Jesus is God Almighty!

In fact, the only way that the NT could even speak of Jesus as creating and sustaining all things is if they actually believed that he is Jehovah God in the flesh (even though he is not the Father or the Holy Spirit), since the Hebrew Scriptures are clear that Jehovah alone created and sustains everything:

“Thou, even thou, art Lord alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.” Nehemiah 9:6

“Which ALONE spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.” Job 9:8

“Thus saith the Lord, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the Lord that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens ALONE; that spreadeth abroad the earth BY MYSELF;” Isaiah 44:24

“Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last. MINE HAND also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and MY RIGHT HAND hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together.” Isaiah 48:12-13

Hence, the only way that Jesus could even be described as the unchanging Creator and Sustainer of all things is if the inspired authors were convinced that Christ is Jehovah God Incarnate (which he is)! 

This now brings me to the next section. 

LORD (JEHOVAH)

There are two specific ways in which the New Testament identifies Jesus as Jehovah. First, he is called Lord (kyrios in Greek) in contexts which are clearly meant to depict him as Jehovah God. That the term Lord can be used in this way shouldn’t surprise us since the Jews early on started to substitute the divine name with the Aramaic and Greek words for Lord in order to avoid violating the command which warns against using God’s holy name in vain (cf. Exodus 20:7). Thus, a Hebrew speaking Jew would have substituted the name Jehovah with Adonay. On the other hand, a Jew speaking Aramaic would have used Mare, whereas a Greek-speaking one would employ Kyrios instead.

To illustrate this point, notice the following OT citation:

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord (YHWH Elohenu Yhwh Echad): And thou shalt love the Lord (YHWH) thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.” Deuteronomy 6:4-5

The Hebrew text uses the divine name Jehovah, also known as the Tetragrammaton (“four letters,” i.e. yod heh vav heh [YHVH]). However, when the NT cites this verse it substitutes the divine name with the Greek word kyrios:

“And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord (kyrios) our God is one Lord (kyrios heis estin): And thou shalt love the Lord (kyrion) thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.” Mark 12:29-30

This establishes that the word Lord could, and often was, used in place of the Hebrew Tetragrammaton to denote the God of Israel, and of all flesh, namely Jehovah.

With the foregoing in perspective, the NT remarkably singles out Jesus as the one Lord through whom all things came into existence and are kept together:

“But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ (heis kyrios ‘Iesous Christos), by whom are all things, and we by him.” 1 Corinthians 8:6 – cf. Ephesians 4:5

The reason why we say that this is rather remarkable is because the only way that Christ can be the one Lord by whom all things were made and continue to exist is if he is Jehovah, since he is the One whom the Hebrew Bible identifies as the one Lord that made all things (cf. Job 9:8; Isaiah 44:24).

The second manner in which the NT identifies Christ as Jehovah is by taking OT texts and themes, which refer to Jehovah, and applying them to Jesus.

For example, the Hebrew Scriptures speak of calling on the name of Jehovah in order to be saved:

“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.” Joel 2:32

A text that is used in the NT to exhort individuals to confess Jesus as Lord so that they may receive salvation:

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:9-13

The Psalmist tells the people to taste and see that Jehovah is good:

“O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.” Psalm 34:8

A verse which Peter alludes to when reminding Christians of the grace of the Lord Jesus which they have tasted:

“If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 2:3-5

And the Day of Jehovah that is mentioned throughout the OT,

“Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.” Joel 1:15

“Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord God: for the day of the Lord is at hand: for the Lord hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath bid his guests. And it shall come to pass in the day of the Lord‘s sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king’s children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel. In the same day also will I punish all those that leap on the threshold, which fill their masters’ houses with violence and deceit… The great day of the Lord is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the Lord: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly. That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers. And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the Lord: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung. Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord‘s wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.” Zephaniah 1:7-9, 14-18

Ends up becoming the Day of the Lord Jesus in the NT:

“So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 1:7-8

“To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.” 1 Corinthians 5:5

Moreover, Jehovah swears that every knee will bow and every tongue confess to him, in recognition of his being the only righteous God and Savior:

“Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the Lord? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.” Isaiah 45:21-23

An event that will be fulfilled when every knee bends and every tongue confesses that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God the Father!

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11

There is more, since the Jehovah who is said to rule forever as Lord of lords,

“O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.” Psalm 136:3 – cf. Deuteronomy 10:17

“Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.” Psalm 145:13

Is now revealed to be the Lord Jesus in the NT:

“For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:11

“These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.” Revelation 17:14 – cf. 19:11-16

In fact, Jehovah is the First and the Last, the Alpha and the Omega, and the Beginning and the End,

“Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last, and beside me there is no God.” Isaiah 44:6 – cf. 48:12; 41:4

“And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.” Revelation 21:6-7

Who, according to the NT, died and came back to life again, and shall be coming quickly:

“And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” Revelation 1:17-18

“And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;” Revelation 2:8

“And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last… He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.” Revelation 22:12-13, 20

Hence, Jesus is Jehovah God (even though he is not the Father or the Holy Spirit)!
