The God-breathed Scriptures teach that there is absolutely no one, whether in heaven or on the earth, that is like Jehovah, none who are Jehovah’s equal:
“There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.” 1 Samuel 2:2
“Among the gods there is none like you, LORD; no deeds can compare with yours. All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, LORD; they will bring glory to your name. For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God.” Psalm 86:8-10
“The heavens praise your wonders, LORD, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones. For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings? In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him. Who is like you, LORD God Almighty? You, LORD, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.” Psalm 89:5-8
“‘With whom, then, will you compare God? To what image will you liken him?… To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?’ says the Holy One.” Isaiah 40:18, 25
And yet these same inspired writings claim that Jesus Christ is exactly like Jehovah, since he is Jehovah’s equal who can do everything that only God Almighty can do:
“For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. Jesus gave them this answer: ‘Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his [the Son’s] voice and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.’” John 5:18-29
“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Philippians 2:5-8
The following passage is rather astonishing,
“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven… “And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, ‘Let all God’s angels worship him.’… But about the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.’ He also says, ‘In the beginning, Lord [the Son], you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.’” Hebrews 1:3, 6, 8-12
Since, not only does it say that Jesus is the exact representation/imprint of God’s uncreated, infinite being who sustains all creation by his own powerful word, and is therefore identical to Jehovah in essence, it also takes the following Psalm, which describes Jehovah as the unchanging Creator and Sustainer of all things,
“In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.” Psalm 102:25-27
And applies it to the Son!
It even depicts the Lord Jesus receiving worship from the entire angelic host in the same context that the following OT text describes Jehovah being worshiped by all the host of heaven:
“You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.” Nehemiah 9:6
Like the Son, all the angels worship Jehovah in relation to Jehovah’s having created and sustaining all creation.
To top it off, we even have an OT verse which describes the coming Messiah as Jehovah’s equal:
“‘Awake, O sword, against my Shepherd, the man who is my associate and equal (amiti),’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘Strike down the Shepherd and the sheep will scatter, but I will come back and comfort and care for the lambs.” Zechariah 13:7 Living Bible (TLB)
The word amiti describes one who is next of kin, someone who is of the same genus or nature. This indicates that the Shepherd will be a human being who possesses the same nature as Jehovah, which in turn means that Jehovah’s Shepherd will be both God and Man at the same time.
The Lord Jesus applied this text in reference to the disciples abandoning him:
“‘You will all fall away,’ Jesus told them, ‘for it is written: “I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.” But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.’” Mark 14:27-28
In ascribing this text to his own Person, Jesus was basically identifying himself as the God-Man, the Shepherd whom the prophet said would be both divine and human, being the One who is equal to Jehovah essence.
To sum up what we have learned thus far:
- There is no heavenly or earthly being like Jehovah, none that is his equal.
- Jesus Christ is exactly like Jehovah who does everything that Jehovah alone can do, and is therefore his equal.
- Since there isn’t anyone that is equal to Jehovah, the only way that Jesus can be exactly like Jehovah and do everything that only Jehovah can do, is if Jesus is Jehovah God in the flesh.
- At the same time, Jesus is not the Father or the Holy Spirit, which means that Jesus isn’t the only Person who is Jehovah God.
- The Holy Bible identifies the Father as Jehovah, and the Spirit as the eternal Spirit of God whom Jehovah used to create and give life to all things (cf. Genesis 1:1-2; Job 33:4; Psalm 104:30; John 6:63; 2 Corinthians 3:6; Hebrews 9:14).
- Therefore, both the Father and the Holy Spirit must also be Jehovah God.
- This means that the one true God Jehovah eternally exists as three eternally distinct Persons or relationships, namely, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
