Jesus Christ: The God-Man Has Arrived
According to the inspired Christian writings, Jesus is the fulfillment of all the OT proclamations concerning the coming of a royal figure that is both divine and human.
Daniel’s Son of Man Has Come!
For instance, Jesus identifies himself as the Son of Man whom Daniel saw coming with the clouds of heaven to reign forever and to be worshiped by all the nations:
“But he stayed quiet, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?’ Jesus said, ‘I am. You will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of the sky.’” Mark 14:61-62 – cf. Matthew 26:63-64
Note how our Lord combines the language of both Daniel 7:13 and psalm 110:1 to describe his glorious enthronement and coming in judgment over the nations.
“For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to everyone according to his deeds. Most certainly I tell you, there are some standing here who will in no way taste of death until they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.” Matthew 16:27-28
“‘But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. Before him all the nations will be gathered, and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will tell those on his right hand, ‘Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you took me in. I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me. I was in prison and you came to me.” Then the righteous will answer him, saying, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you a drink? When did we see you as a stranger and take you in, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and come to you?” The King will answer them, “Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.” Then he will say also to those on the left hand, “Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry, and you didn’t give me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink; I was a stranger, and you didn’t take me in; naked, and you didn’t clothe me; sick, and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.” Then they will also answer, saying, “Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didn’t help you?” Then he will answer them, saying, “Most certainly I tell you, because you didn’t do it to one of the least of these, you didn’t do it to me.” These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.’ When Jesus had finished all these words, he said to his disciples, ‘You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.’” Matthew 25:31-26:2
“He said to the disciples, ‘The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. They will tell you, “Look, here!” or “Look, there!” Don’t go away or follow after them, for as the lightning, when it flashes out of one part under the sky, shines to another part under the sky; so will the Son of Man be in his day. But first, he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. As it was in the days of Noah, even so it will also be in the days of the Son of Man. They ate, they drank, they married, and they were given in marriage until the day that Noah entered into the ship, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Likewise, even as it was in the days of Lot: they ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; but in the day that Lot went out from Sodom, it rained fire and sulfur from the sky and destroyed them all. It will be the same way in the day that the Son of Man is revealed.’” Luke 17:22-30
“Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory… Therefore be watchful all the time, praying that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.” Luke 21:27, 36
“While he was still speaking, a crowd appeared. He who was called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He came near to Jesus to kiss him. But Jesus said to him, ‘Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?’” Luke 22:47-48
“No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven. As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:13-15
“Jesus therefore said to them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you don’t have life in yourselves. He who eats MY flesh and drinks MY blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day… Then what if you would see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?’” John 6:53-54, 62
“ Jesus answered them, “The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified… And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ But he said this, signifying by what kind of death he should die. The multitude answered him, ‘We have heard out of the law that the Christ remains forever. How do you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up?’ Who is this Son of Man?’” John 12:23, 32-34
“When he had gone out, Jesus said, ‘Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him immediately.’” John 13:31-32
In this next one,
“For the Father judges no one, but he has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who doesn’t honor the Son doesn’t honor the Father who sent him… He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man.” John 5:22-23, 27
Christ alludes to Daniel’s proclamation that the Son of Man receives the exact same worship that the Ancient of Days is given, as he judges all the nations. And one of the functions of a ruler is to judge, which is precisely what the Lord as the Son of Man does.
Jesus’ inspired emissaries also taught the risen Lord is the Danielic Son of Man:
“But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, and said, ‘Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!’” Acts 7:55-56
“Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, including those who pierced him. All the tribes of the earth will mourn over him. Even so, Amen. ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’ I John, your brother and partner with you in the oppression, Kingdom, and perseverance in Christ Jesus, was on the isle that is called Patmos because of God’s Word and the testimony of Jesus Christ. I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice, like a trumpet saying, ‘What you see, write in a book and send to the seven assemblies: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.’ I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. Having turned, I saw seven golden lamp stands. And among the lamp stands was one like a son of man, clothed with a robe reaching down to his feet, and with a golden sash around his chest. His head and his hair were white as white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire. His feet were like burnished brass, as if it had been refined in a furnace. His voice was like the voice of many waters. He had seven stars in his right hand. Out of his mouth proceeded a sharp two-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining at its brightest. When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. He laid his right hand on me, saying, ‘Don’t be afraid. I am the first and the last, and the Living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever. Amen. I have the keys of Death and of Hades.’” Revelation 1:7-18
I looked, and saw a white cloud, and on the cloud one sitting like a son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle. Another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him who sat on the cloud, ‘Send your sickle, and reap; for the hour to reap has come; for the harvest of the earth is ripe!’ He who sat on the cloud thrust his sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped.” Revelation 14:14-16
There’s more to come in the final segment.
