JESUS CHRIST: THE GOD-MAN WHO REIGNS ON HIGH

In this short post I am going to show how both the Hebrew Bible and the Quran provide support for Jesus being described as God Almighty in the flesh.

The Hebrew Bible testifies that YHVH alone is exalted far above all the gods as the great King, since he alone sits enthroned on high over all the earth as Lord of lords. YHVH is further depicted as the Shepherd who sustains his flock and whose voice they must hear:

“For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe.” Deuteronomy 10:17

“For the Lord is the great God, And the great King above all gods. In His hand are the deep places of the earth; The heights of the hills are His also. The sea is His, for He made it; And His hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand. Today, if you will hear His voice: ‘Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, As in the day of trial in the wilderness,’” Psalm 95:3-8

“For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, But the Lord made the heavens… before the Lord. For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with righteousness, And the peoples with His truth.” Psalm 96:4-5, 13

“Let all be put to shame who serve carved images, Who boast of idols. Worship Him, all you godsFor You, Lordare most high above all the earth; You are exalted FAR ABOVE all gods.” Psalm 97:7, 9

“That they may know that You, whose name alone is the Lord, Are the Most High over all the earth.” Psalm 83:18

“Who is like the LORD our God, Who dwells on high,” Psalm 113:5

“Oh, give thanks to the Lord of lords! For His mercy endures forever:” Psalm 136:3

This is why YHVH’s name alone is exalted above all else:

“Let them praise the name of the Lord, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heaven.” Psalm 148:13

And even though Allah of the Quran is not the true God, nevertheless the Muslim scripture also teaches that God alone has dominion over the heavens and earth:

Unto Allah belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth. Allah is Able to do all things. S. 3:189 Pickthall

And say: Praise be to Allah, Who hath not taken unto Himself a son, and Who hath no partner in the Sovereignty, nor hath He any protecting friend through dependence. And magnify Him with all magnificence. S. 17:111

Say: Allah is Best Aware how long they tarried. His is the Invisible of the heavens and the earth. How clear of sight is He and keen of hearing! They have no protecting friend beside Him, and He maketh none to share in His government. S. 18:26 Pickthall

He unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth, He hath chosen no son nor hath He any partner in the Sovereignty. He hath created everything and hath meted out for it a measure. S. 25:2 Pickthall

Here’s where it gets rather astonishing.

The inspired New Testament accounts proclaim that Jesus Christ has been exalted far above all created beings, possessing the name that is above ever name in existence, being the One that God the Father personally glorifies as the Lord God who reigns on high over the entire creation which the Son himself created and sustains by his all-powerful word!

“and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty powerwhich He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,FAR ABOVE ALL principality and power and might and dominion, and EVERY NAMED that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.” Ephesians 1:19-23

“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11

“God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high… But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: ‘Let all the angels of God worship Him.’… But to the Son He says:Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.’ And: ‘YOU,Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the work of YOUR hands
. They will perish, but YOU remain; And they will all grow old like a garment; Like a cloak YOU will fold them up, And they will be changed. But YOU are the same, And YOUR years will not fail.’” Hebrews 1:1-3, 6, 8-12

“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.” Hebrews 4:14-15

“For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens;” Hebrews 7:26

The risen Lord is also described as the only immortal Sovereign who rules as King of kings and Lord of lords:

“that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ’s appearing, which HE will manifest in HIS own time, HE WHO is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, WHO alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to WHOM be honor and everlasting power. Amen.” 1 Timothy 6:15-16

“These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.” Revelation 17:14

“Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.” Revelation 19:11-16

Interestingly, Muhammad is reported to have said that Allah hates the man who claims to be the king of kings, obviously because this is a title befitting the majesty of God alone:

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “The most awful name in Allah’s sight on the Day of Resurrection, will be (that of) a man calling himself Malik Al-Amlak (the king of kings).” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 224 https://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=73&translator=1&start=0&number=224)

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “The most awful (meanest) name in Allah’s sight.” Sufyan said more than once, “The most awful (meanest) name in Allah’s sight is (that of) a man calling himself king of kings.” Sufyan said, “Somebody else (i.e., other than Abu Az-Zinad, a sub-narrator) says: What is meant by ‘The king of kings’ is ‘Shahan Shah.’” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 225 https://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=73&translator=1&start=0&number=225)

Abu Huraira reported from Allah’s Messenger so many ahadith and one of them was this that Allah’s Messenger said: The most wretched person in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection and the worst person and target of His wrath would of the person who is called Malik al-Amlak (the King of Kings) for there is no king but Allah. (Sahih Muslim, Book 025, Number 5339 https://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=025&translator=2&start=0&number=5339

And yet the exalted Son of God is magnified for being the One who rules as the King of kings and Lord of lords!

Christ is even said to be the one and only Shepherd that grants his sheep immortal, incorruptible life and whose voice they must all obey!

“‘I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherdMy sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and My Father are one.’ Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?’ The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.’” John 10:14-16, 27-33

No wonder the Jews thought that Jesus was claiming to be God, since he most definitely was!

Now seeing that God alone is said to reign over his creation as the Most High, this means that Jesus must be God Almighty in the flesh who is essentially one with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, Christ could never be exalted to reign alongside the Father as the Most High over every created being in existence:

“Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth.’ Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice: ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain To receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing!’ And EVERY CREATURE which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and ALL THAT ARE IN THEM, I heard saying: ‘Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him who sits on the throne, AND TO THE LAMB, forever and ever!’ Then the four living creatures said, ‘Amen!’ And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped Him who lives forever and ever.” Revelation 5:8-14
