JESUS CLAIMED TO BE GOD ACCORDING TO THE QURAN

In this post I will show how Jesus ascribes the very titles and roles, which the Quran itself acknowledges can only be attributed to the true God.

For instance, pay attention to the following descriptions of Allah:

That is because Allah, He is the Truth, and it is He Who gives life to the dead, and it is He Who is Able to do all things. And surely, the Hour is coming, there is no doubt about it, and certainly, Allah will resurrect those who are in the graves. S. 22:6-7 Hilali-Khan

Whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Allah, and He is the All-Mighty, All-Wise. His is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, It is He Who gives life and causes death; and He is Able to do all things. He is the First (nothing is before Him) and the Last (nothing is after Him), the Most High (nothing is above Him) and the Most Near (nothing is nearer than Him). And He is the All-Knower of every thing. He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days and then Istawa (rose over) the Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty). He knows what goes into the earth and what comes forth from it, what descends from the heaven and what ascends thereto. And He is with you (by His Knowledge) wheresoever you may be. And Allah is the All-Seer of what you do. His is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. And to Allah return all the matters (for decision). S. 57:1-5 Hilali-Khan

To sum up the claims of the aforementioned quranic texts:

Everything in the heavens and earth glorifies Allah.

Allah possesses the sovereignty of the heavens and earth.

Allah is seated on his throne.

Allah gives life and brings death.

Allah resurrects the dead from their graves at the last hour.

Allah is omnipotent and omniscient.

Allah is the First and Last.

Allah is the truth.

Now let’s contrast this with the claims of Jesus.

Jesus’ possesses absolute sovereignty over the entire creation, being the omnipresent and omniscient Son of God:

“Then Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the NAME of the Father and OF THE SON and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen.” Matthew 28:18-20

Jesus is the Truth and the Life who has power over life, and shall be the One that will resurrect all the dead from the graves at the last hour/day:

“Then Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do. For whatever He does, likewise the Son does. For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all things that He Himself does. And He will show Him greater works than these so that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom He will… Truly, truly I say to you, the hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear THE VOICE OF THE SON OF GOD, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has given to the Son to have life in Himself… Do not marvel at this. For the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear HIS VOICE and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.’” John 5:19-21, 25-29

“‘All whom the Father gives Me will come to Me, and he who comes to Me I will never cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of the Father who has sent Me, that of all whom He has given Me, I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. This is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.’ The Jews then murmured about Him, because He said, ‘I am the bread which came down from heaven.’ They said, ‘Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, “I have come down from heaven”?’ Jesus therefore answered them, ‘Do not murmur among yourselves. No one can come to Me unless the Father who has sent Me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day… Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life. And I will raise him up on the last day.’” John 6:37-44, 54

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’” John 14:6

Jesus sits on his glorious throne alongside the Father as the righteous Judge who will determine the fate of all the nations:

“For the Son of Man shall come with His angels in the glory of HIS Father, and then He will repay every man according to his works.” Matthew 16:27

“‘When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. Before Him will be gathered all nations, and He will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates his sheep from the goats. He will set the sheep at His right hand, but the goats at the left. Then the King will say to those at His right hand, “Come, you blessed of MY Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave Me food, I was thirsty and you gave Me drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in. I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you visited Me, I was in prison and you came to Me.” Then the righteous will answer Him, “Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? And when did we see You sick or in prison and come to You?” The King will answer, “Truly I say to you, as you have done it for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you have done it for Me.” Then He will say to those at the left hand, “Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave Me no food, I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, I was naked and you did not clothe Me, I was sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.” Then they also will answer Him, “Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not serve You?” He will answer, “Truly I say to you, as you did it not for one of the least of these, you did it not for Me.” And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.’ When Jesus had finished all these sayings, He said to His disciples, ‘You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to be crucified.’” Matthew 25:31-46; 26:1-2

“To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: ‘The Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like fine brass, says these things: I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience, and that your last works are more than the first. But I have a few things against you: You permit that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat food sacrificed to idols. I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, but she did not repent. Look! I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds. I will put her children to death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the hearts and minds. I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.’” Revelation 2:18-23

Jesus is the Almighty who is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, and the First and the Last that has power over death and the underworld:

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave to Him to show to His servants things which must soon take place. He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, who bears record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy and keep those things which are written in it, for the time is near… and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Look! He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen. ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,’ says the Lord, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’ I, John, both your brother and companion in the tribulation and kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the isle that is called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me a great voice like a trumpet, saying, ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,’ and ‘What you see, write in a book, and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.’ I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And when I turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks, and in the midst of the seven candlesticks was one like a Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and with a golden sash wrapped around the chest. The hair on His head was white like wool, as white as snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire. His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and His voice as the sound of many waters. He had in His right hand seven stars, and out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword. His appearance was like the sun shining brightly. When I saw Him, I fell at His feet as though I were dead. Then He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, though I was dead. Look! I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death.’ Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this.’” Revelation 1:1-3, 5-19

Before proceeding any further, it is vitally important to keep in mind that Revelation claims to be the visions and words which the risen Christ made known to John his disciple. As such, the things stated about Jesus come directly from the risen Lord, and therefore are his very own descriptions of himself.

“Then he showed me a pure river of the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the THRONE of God and of the Lamb in the middle of its street. On each side of the river was the tree of life, which bore twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. There shall be no more curse. The THRONE of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him… ‘Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with Me to give to each one according to his work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the LastI, Jesus, have sent My angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.’ He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Even so, come Lord Jesus! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.” Revelation 22:1-3, 12-13, 16, 20

To further confirm that it is Jesus, and not the Father, who is speaking in all these texts as the coming Judge, note what the Lord himself taught concerning who exactly will be judging and repaying every man for what they have done:

The Father judges NO ONE, but has committed ALL judgment to the Son, that all men should honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.” John 5:22-23

Since the Father judges no one there is simply no way around the fact that it is Christ himself who claims to be the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, and the First and the Last, being the omniscient Son that knows the hearts and thoughts of every individual!

Astonishingly, these are the very characteristics and functions which the Hebrew Bible attributes to YHVH God Almighty! I.e., It is YHVH who is the First and the Last that comes to reward every person for what they have earned, since he alone knows the hearts and minds of everyone:

“then hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive, and act, and render to everyone according to all his ways, whose hearts You know—for only You know the hearts of the sons of men—” 1 Kings 8:39

“Thus says the LORD the King of Israel, and his Redeemer the LORD of Hosts: I am the first, and I am the last; besides Me there is no God.” Isaiah 44:6 – Cf. 41:4; 48:12

“See, the Lord GOD will come with a strong hand, and His arm shall rule for Him; see, His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him.” Isaiah 40:10 – Cf. 62:11

“I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give to every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his deeds.” Jeremiah 17:10 – Cf. 11:20; 29:23; Psalm 62:12; Proverbs 24:12

Finally, every created thing in the entire creation glorifies Christ to the same extent and for the exact same duration that God the Father is glorified:

“When He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of saints. And they sang a new song, saying: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, and have made us kings and priests unto our God; and we shall reign on the earth.’ Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voices of many angels, numbering ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice: ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing!’ Then I heard EVERY CREATURE which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that are in them, saying: ‘To Him who sits on the throne AND TO THE LAMB be blessing and honor and glory and power, forever and ever!’ The four living creatures said, ‘Amen.’ And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshipped Him who lives forever and ever.” Revelation 5:8-14

The foregoing leaves absolutely no doubt that Jesus did in fact claim to be God Almighty who became man for our redemption in the most explicit and clearest manner. And yet Christ was equally clear that he is not the Father or the Holy Spirit, which is why the Church was forced to formulate the doctrine of the blessed and most holy Trinity.
