In this post I will be listing all of the verses where Jesus is described as the Son of God. The purpose isn’t to exegete the meaning of the texts, but to simply provide a handy list of all the pertinent references to Christ being identified as God’s unique Son. I will also include statements where Jesus and the inspired writers refer to God as the Father in relation to Christ. I will begin with Mark’s Gospel and end it with John’s Revelation (also known as the Apocalypse).

All scriptural references are from the Revised Standard Version (RSV).

MARK

“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God… And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, ‘Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased.” Mark 1:1, 10-11

“And whenever the unclean spirits beheld him, they fell down before him and cried out, ‘You are the Son of God.’” Mark 3:11

“They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Ger′asenes. And when he had come out of the boat, there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, who lived among the tombs; and no one could bind him any more, even with a chain; 4 for he had often been bound with fetters and chains, but the chains he wrenched apart, and the fetters he broke in pieces; and no one had the strength to subdue him. And Peter said to Jesus, ‘Master, it is well that we are here; let us make three booths, one for you and one for Moses and one for Eli′jah.’ For he did not know what to say, for they were exceedingly afraid. “He had still one other, a beloved son; finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ And they took him and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.” Mark 12:6-8

“And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, ‘Abba, Father, all things are possible to thee; remove this cup from me; yet not what I will, but what thou wilt.’” Mark 14:35-36

“And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, ‘Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?’ But he was silent and made no answer. And the tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.’ But he answered, ‘It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”’ Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, “He will give his angels charge of you,” and “On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.”’ Jesus said to him, ‘Again it is written, “You shall not tempt the Lord your God.”’” Matthew 4:1-7

“Not every one who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers.’” Matthew 7:21-23

“Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesare′a Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do men say that the Son of man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, others say Eli′jah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven… For the Son of man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay every man for what he has done.’” Matthew 16:13-19, 27

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven. What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray?And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish… So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.” Matthew 18:10-14, 35

“When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest, and cut off his ear. Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, ‘You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.’ So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, ‘He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. “In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, ‘Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you!’ But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.’ And Mary said to the angel, ‘How shall this be, since I have no husband?’ And the angel said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.’” Luke 1:26-35

“After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions;and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.And when they saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, ‘Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously.’And he said to them, ‘How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?’And they did not understand the saying which he spoke to them.” Luke 2:46-450

“Yet Jesus has been counted worthy of as much more glory than Moses as the builder of a house has more honor than the house. Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ was faithful over God’s house as a son. HONORABLE MENTIONS

There may be a few other texts which refer to Christ as God’s Son, depending on how one decides to interpret the underlying Greek terms. For instance, contrast the way the RSV renders the passages in question with the Modern English Version (MEV):

“The God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus (ton Paida autou), whom you delivered up and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses… God, having raised up his servant (ton Paida autou), sent him to you first, to bless you in turning every one of you from your wickedness.” Acts 3:13-15, 26

“The God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His Son Jesus, whom you handed over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him. “Indeed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were assembled together against Your holy Son Jesus whom You have anointed… by stretching out Your hand to heal and that signs and wonders may be performed in the name of Your holy Son Jesus.” MEV

The term pais and its derivatives can refer to a servant and/or a child, as the following Greek lexicon affirms: Strong’s Greek 3816.

Therefore, Luke may have chosen this word since it functions as a double entendre, an expression which highlights the fact that Christ is both a Son and a Servant. I.e., Jesus is God’s unique Son who chose to become the Father’s Servant for the express purpose of accomplishing the salvation of the world.
