In this post, I am going to look at specific texts in the Hebrew Bible where the coming Anointed King of Israel is described as a divine Being, who possesses some of the same essential characteristics and assumes the same roles, which are typically attributed to Jehovah God. I will also supply the rabbinic interpretation of these texts to show that even the rabbis interpreted these OT passages as prophecies of the Messiah.
PSALMS
David, in the following Psalm, exhorts the nations to submit to the rulership of Jehovah and his Christ, and further describes the Anointing King as God’s divinely begotten Son whom the nations must worship, lest he destroys them in his wrath:
“Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, ‘Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.’ He who sits (yosheb) in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord (Adonay) shall hold them in derision. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure: ‘Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion. I will declare the [g]decree: The LORD has said to Me, “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel. Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, And rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him”’.” Psalm 2:1-12
What makes this so remarkable is that David worships this coming Ruler as his exalted Lord, who sits with Jehovah on the same throne:
“A Psalm of David. The affirmation of Jehovah to my Lord (Adoni): `Sit (sheb) at My right hand, Till I make thine enemies thy footstool.’ The rod of thy strength doth Jehovah send from Zion, Rule in the midst of thine enemies. Thy people [are] free-will gifts in the day of Thy strength, in the honours of holiness, From the womb, from the morning, Thou hast the dew of thy youth. Jehovah hath sworn, and doth not repent, `Thou [art] a priest to the age, According to the order of Melchizedek.’ The Lord (Adonay) on thy right hand smote kings In the day of HIS anger. HE doth judge among the nations, HE hath completed the carcases, Hath smitten the head over the mighty earth. From a brook in the way HE drinketh, Therefore HE doth lift up the head!” Psalm 110:1-7 YLT
David employs the same Hebrew verb used in Psalm 2:4 to describe the enthronement of the Messianic Ruler and further identifies him as a priestly King after the order of Melchizedek. This indicates that the Messiah is a priest who will make atonement for the sins of his people since this is what priests typically do.
If this weren’t amazing enough, the prophet also addresses him as Adonay, a word typically used for Jehovah God.
That the Messiah sits with Jehovah on the same throne is confirmed by Psalm 2:4 and the following verses, which all describe Jehovah sitting in heaven as the Sovereign Lord over all creation:
“He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision.” Psalm 2:4
“The LORD is in His holy temple, The LORD’s throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.” Psalm 11:4
“The LORD has established His throne in heaven, And His kingdom rules over all.” Psalm 103:19
The Messiah, therefore, shares in Jehovah’s rule over all creation, a fact confirmed by the following Psalm:
“My heart is overflowing with a good theme; I recite my composition concerning the King; My tongue is the pen of a ready writer… Your throne, O God (Elohim), is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions… So the King will greatly desire your beauty; Because He is your Lord (Adonayik), worship Him… I will make Your name to be remembered in all generations; Therefore the people shall praise You forever and ever.” Psalm 45:1, 6-7, 11, 17
Here, the Messiah is not only addressed as Adonay once again, but he is also called Elohim and is depicted as being worshiped and praised forever and ever!
This isn’t the only time where the coming Messiah is said to receive worship:
“Give the king Your judgments, O God, And Your righteousness to the king’s Son… He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, And from the River to the ends of the earth. Those who dwell in the wilderness will bow before Him, And His enemies will lick the dust. The kings of Tarshish and of the isles Will bring presents; The kings of Sheba and Seba Will offer gifts. Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him; All nations shall serve Him… His name shall endure forever; His name shall continue as long as the sun. And men shall be blessed in Him; All nations shall call Him blessed.” Psalm 72:1, 8-11, 17
What makes the foregoing descriptions truly astonishing is that these very titles and descriptions are ascribed to Jehovah.
For instance, it is Jehovah who is the Lord, or Adonay, that reigns forever and who is to be worshiped by all the nations, and it is his name alone that is exalted above all creation:
“All the ends of the world Shall remember and turn to the LORD, And all the families of the nations Shall worship before You. For the kingdom is the LORD’s, And He rules over the nations. All the prosperous of the earth Shall eat and worship; All those who go down to the dust Shall bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep himself alive. A posterity shall serve Him. It will be recounted of the Lord (Adonay) to the next generation, They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born, That He has done this.” Psalm 22:27-31
“Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord (Adonay); Nor are there any works like Your works. All nations whom You have made Shall come and worship before You, O Lord (Adonay), And shall glorify Your name. For You are great, and do wondrous things; You alone are God (Elohim).” Psalm 86:8-10
“Let them praise the name of the LORD, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heaven.” Psalm 148:13
“Thus says your Lord (Adonayik), The LORD and your God (Elohayik), Who pleads the cause of His people: ‘See, I have taken out of your hand The cup of trembling, The dregs of the cup of My fury; You shall no longer drink it.’” Isaiah 51:22
“‘And it shall come to pass That from one New Moon to another, And from one Sabbath to another, All flesh shall come to worship before Me,’ says the LORD.” Isaiah 66:23
“You, O LORD, remain forever; Your throne from generation to generation.” Lamentations 5:19
RABBINIC INTERPRETATION
Why have nations gathered: Our Sages (Ber. 7b) expounded the passage as referring to the King Messiah, but according to its apparent meaning, it is proper to interpret it as referring to David himself, as the matter is stated (II Sam. 5:17): “And the Philistines heard that they had anointed David as king over Israel, and all the Philistines went up to seek, etc.,” and they fell into his hands. Concerning them, he says, “Why have nations gathered,” and they all gathered. Psalm 72

ISAIAH
The prophet Isaiah predicted the birth of a Child that would shine forth from Galilee to sit on David’s throne, who would be the Mighty God in the flesh:
“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.” Isaiah 9:6-7
Isaiah further described the exaltation of this Davidic King:
“Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently; He shall be exalted and extolled (yarum wa’nissa) and be very high.” Isaiah 52:13
Remarkably, the prophet attributes to the Messiah the very name,
“And it shall come to pass in that day That the remnant of Israel, And such as have escaped of the house of Jacob, Will never again depend on him who [a]defeated them, But will depend on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. The remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, To the Mighty God.” Isaiah 10:20-21
And the exalted status of Jehovah, even though this glorious position is one that Jehovah plainly states shall not be conferred upon anyone besides himself:
“The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, The haughtiness (rum) of men shall be bowed down, And the LORD ALONE shall be exalted in that day. For the day of the LORD of hosts Shall come upon everything proud and lofty (ram), Upon everything lifted up (nissa)— And it shall be brought low—Upon all the cedars of Lebanon that are high and lifted up (ha’ramim waha’nissa’im), And upon all the oaks of Bashan; Upon all the high (ha’ramim) mountains, And upon all the hills that are lifted up (ha’nissaot); Upon every high tower, And upon every fortified wall; Upon all the ships of Tarshish, And upon all the beautiful sloops. The loftiness of man shall be bowed down, And the haughtiness (rum) of men shall be brought low; The LORD ALONE will be exalted in that day,” Isaiah 2:11-17
“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up (ram wa’nissa), and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!’ And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke. So I said: ‘Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The LORD of hosts.’” Isaiah 6:1-5
“The LORD is exalted, for He dwells on high (marom); He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness… ’Now I will rise,’ says the LORD; ‘Now I will be exalted (eromam), Now I will lift Myself up (ennase).’” Isaiah 33:5, 10
“For thus says the High and Lofty One (ram wa’nissa) Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: ‘I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.’” Isaiah 57:15
This affirms that the Messiah must be the human incarnation and manifestation of God Almighty; otherwise, he could not share in Jehovah’s rule or be called by one of his unique divine names.
RABBINIC INTERPRETATION
The prophet said to the house of David, For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, and He has taken the law upon Himself to keep it. His name is called from eternity, Wonderful, The Mighty God, who liveth to eternity, The Messiah, whose peace shall be great upon us in His days. “I will now proceed to my exposition. 13 Behold my servant shall have understanding. From the prophet’s saying ‘understanding,’ it may be seen that all the lofty predicates which he assigns to him have their source in this attribute; in virtue of his comprehensive intelligence he will attain an elevation above that even of the most perfect men in the world. He shall be high and exalted, and lofty exceedingly. According to the Midrash of our Rabbis; he will be higher than Abraham, who was first of all a ‘high father,’ and afterwards a father of a multitude. He will be more exalted than Moses, who was ‘exalted’ above the exalted ones of Levi (cf. Num. iii. 32), who was a prophet such that ‘none arose like him in Israel,’ (Deut. xxxiv. 10), who ‘saved’ Israel ‘with a great salvation’ (cf. DANIEL
In the book of Daniel, the prophet sees a divine Figure in human semblance approaching God and receiving an everlasting kingdom, whom all the nations are expected to worship forever and ever:
“I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him. Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, Which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one Which shall not be destroyed.” Daniel 7:13-14
Daniel describes this divine Being as receiving the exact same worship that God receives, and as reigning to the same extent and for the same period of time that God does:
“Then the kingdom and dominion, And the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven, Shall be given to the people, the saints of the Most High. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, And all dominions shall serve and obey Him.” Daniel 7:27
“‘There are certain Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego; these men, O king, have not paid due regard to you. They do not serve your gods or worship the gold image which you have set up.’ Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying to them, ‘Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the gold image which I have set up?’… If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.’… Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying, ‘Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, who sent His Angel and delivered His servants who trusted in Him, and they have frustrated the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they should not serve nor worship any god except their own God!’” Daniel 3:12, 14, 17-18, 28

Clearly, this is no mere creature, but rather this figure has to be God Almighty in the flesh!

ISRAEL’S ROYAL GOD-MAN HAS COME!
The inspired New Testament authors identify Jesus as the promised Messiah of the Hebrew Bible. It, therefore, comes as no surprise that they would either cite or apply the language of the foregoing Old Testament passages to the Lord Jesus.
For example, Jesus refers to himself as the Lord of David who sits at God’s right hand, and as the Son of Man whom the prophet Daniel spoke:
“And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again… For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.” Mark 8:31, 38
“Then Jesus answered and said, while He taught in the temple, ‘How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David? For David himself said by the Holy Spirit: “The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”’ Therefore David himself calls Him “Lord”; how is He then his Son?’ And the common people heard Him gladly.” Mark 12:35-37
“But He kept silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked Him, saying to Him, ‘Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?’ Jesus said, ‘I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.’” Mark 14:61-62
“For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.” Matthew 16:27-28
“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:’… Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, that He said to His disciples, ‘You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.’” Matthew 25:31-34, 26:1-2
The New Testament writers do likewise since they attribute Psalm 110 and Daniel 7 to the risen and exalted Christ. They further quote Psalms 2 and 45 in reference to Jesus:
“Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”’” Acts 2:29-35
“The God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His Son Jesus, whom you handed over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him. You denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and you killed the Creator of Life, whom God has raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses.” Acts 3:13-15 Modern English Version (MEV)

So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: ‘Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: “Why did the nations rage, And the people plot vain things? “Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.” Acts 5:31
“But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and said, ‘Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!’” Acts 7:55-56
“God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm: ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.’ And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus: ‘I will give you the sure mercies of David.’ Therefore He also says in another Psalm: ‘You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.’ For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption; but He whom God raised up saw no corruption.” Acts 13:32-37
“Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.” Romans 8:34

But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: ‘Let all the angels of God worship Him.’… But to the Son He says: ‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.’ And: ‘You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. “So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.’ As He also says in another place: ‘You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek’;” Hebrews 5:5-6
“Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.” Hebrews 8:1-2
“But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool.” Hebrews 10:12-13
“looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2

“To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father ON HIS THRONE.” Revelation 3:21
“Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. Pay careful attention to the fact that every created being in existence is depicted as worshiping Jesus in the exact same way that God Almighty is worshiped!
“And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?’” Revelation 6:15-17
“Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars. Then being with child, she cried out in labor and in pain to give birth… His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon as it was born. She bore a male Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her Child was caught up to God AND HIS THRONE… Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, ‘Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.’” Revelation 12:1-2, 4-5, 10
“Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and on the cloud sat One like the Son of Man, having on His head a golden crown, and in His hand a sharp sickle. And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, ‘Thrust in Your sickle and reap, for the time has come for You to reap, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.’ So He who sat on the cloud thrust in His sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped.” Revelation 14:14-16

“And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the THRONE of God AND OF THE LAMB. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse, but the THRONE of God AND OF THE LAMB shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him.” Revelation 22:1-3
